Western Sahara, Aotearoa & the Phosphate Crisis — a guest lecture delivered by Matthew Galloway at Beehive Theatrette on Tuesday, 2nd of May, 2023, hosted by Member of Parliament Golriz Ghahraman.
This public lecture seeks to raise awareness around the different crises woven into our nation’s use of phosphate. Firstly, the human rights issues bound up in New Zealand’s continued importation of phosphate rock from Western Sahara will be addressed and secondly, we will discuss the environmental impacts of phosphate fertilisers as they build up in our fresh water and soil systems. After decades, why is New Zealand still willing to ignore the part we play in prolonging the crisis in Western Sahara?
Developed collaboratively by Matthew Galloway, Blaine Western, and Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington researchers Leon Gurevitch and Ethan Sheaf-Morrison (Google Warming), the presentation will employ communication design and map imaging technology to visualise the scale and stakes involved in this trade.
Additionally, the lecture will raise questions around the reputational damage this trade exposes New Zealand to, while also asking how Government and industry might work together to find alternative phosphate sources, and responsibly and sustainably produce food in Aotearoa.
