Ändern project preview: bilingual layout and translation experiments

OVERVIEW

Ändern is a personal art investigation into language and perspective. I work inside German and English to see how thinking shifts when form and meaning move together. The project treats translation as a design act and tests how definitions, categories, and page structures change what can be said and understood.

Ändern ist eine persönliche Kunstuntersuchung zu Sprache und Perspektive. Ich arbeite in Deutsch und Englisch, um zu sehen, wie sich das Denken verschiebt, wenn Form und Bedeutung sich zusammen bewegen. Das Projekt behandelt Übersetzung als Gestaltungsakt und testet, wie Definitionen, Kategorien und Seitenstrukturen verändern, was gesagt und verstanden werden kann.

APPROACH

I write, design, and publish in German first, then recompose in English. This constraint surfaces bias and forces deliberate structure. Each artefact is a small experiment: a text, a page, a diagram, an audio note, or a score for performance. The goal is not fluency. The goal is to observe how language shapes attention and action in practice.

Ich schreibe, gestalte und veröffentliche zuerst auf Deutsch, dann komponiere ich auf Englisch neu. Diese Einschränkung bringt Vorurteile ans Licht und zwingt zu bewusster Struktur. Jedes Artefakt ist ein kleines Experiment: ein Text, eine Seite, ein Diagramm, eine Audioaufnahme oder eine Partitur für eine Aufführung. Das Ziel ist nicht Sprachbeherrschung. Das Ziel ist zu beobachten, wie Sprache Aufmerksamkeit und Handeln in der Praxis formt.

PROCESS

  • Collect words and phrases from daily use.
  • Define narrow scopes for each term. Note where usage stretches beyond definition.
  • Produce a version in German. Produce a version in English. Compare.
  • Map the edits between versions. Label what was lost, gained, or re-framed.
  • Publish pairs and triptychs. Invite readers to trace the shifts.

TECHNOLOGY

Lightweight tools keep the cognitive load on language, not software.

  • Writing and layout: plain HTML/CSS and InDesign where useful.
  • Type studies: variable fonts and grid systems.
  • Small scripts: word lists, concordance counts, alignment diffs.
  • Audio: short takes to test cadence and breath.
  • Versioning: Git to expose the history of changes.

  • Page choreography: columns that force or break linear reading.
  • Protocol cards: prompts for making and reading within constraint.

IMPACT

The work broadens language learning and sharpens design practice. It shows how definition, order, and medium govern sense. Findings feed back into interface writing, label systems, error messaging, and any place where words and structure meet.

Die Arbeit erweitert das Sprachenlernen und schärft die Designpraxis. Sie zeigt, wie Definition, Ordnung und Medium den Sinn bestimmen. Die Erkenntnisse fließen zurück in Interface-Schreiben, Beschriftungssysteme, Fehlermeldungen und jeden Ort, an dem Wörter und Struktur aufeinandertreffen.

This is not linguistics in the academic sense. It is a lived, situated practice. Claims are bounded by my use. They may be relatable, but they remain personal and provisional.
